When Seamus Heaney was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1995, the Swedish Academy noted the “lyrical beauty and ethical depth” of his work. His poems, though often suffused with allusions to Dante, Homer, and the other greats, are written with startling directness and offer intimate portraits of his life: his mother’s head “bent towards my head,” as they peel potatoes “While All The Others Were Away At Mass,” or his father crying at the funeral of his younger brother in “Mid-Term Break.” Heaney, himself, died unexpectedly at just 74, in 2013, but the intimacies that defined the man and his work are not lost. Two years before he passed Heaney donated his archives, some 10,000 pieces of paper, to the National Library of Ireland “carrying in the boxes himself,” his son Mick recalled. Bernard Lown, an eminent cardiologist who forged a dual legacy in medicine and world affairs, pioneering lifesaving treatments for heart attacks and co-founding an international group of physicians that won a Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to end the nuclear arms race, died Feb. 16 at his home in Chestnut Hill, Mass. He was 99.
He had congestive heart failure, said a granddaughter, Ariel Lown Lewiton, adding that her grandfather oversaw his own medical treatment.
A Jewish immigrant from Lithuania, Dr. Lown came to the United States before the outbreak of World War II and taught himself English by memorizing the pages of a dictionary. ....

Akzo Nobel Q4 Profit Soars, Lifts Dividend, Plans €1 Bln Share Buyback; Sees Margin Growth
Earnings per share were 0.87 euro, up from 0.41 euro last year.
Adjusted earnings per share from continuing operations were 1.08 euros, compared to 0.74 euros a year ago.
Adjusted operating income grew 32 percent to 294 million euros.
Revenue declined 1 percent to 2.21 billion euros from 2.24 billion euros last year.
Revenues grew 6 percent in constant currencies, with volumes 6 percent higher and positive price/mix of 1 percent more than offset by adverse currency impact.
Looking ahead for fiscal 2021, AkzoNobel said it targets to grow at least in line with its relevant markets. Although trends differ per region and segment with raw material inflation expected, margin management and cost-saving programs are in place to deliver 50 basis points increase in return on sales. ....
